The Institute was established in 1973 as the Department of Psychiatry of Rawalpindi Medical College and over the years attained an international repute as the Institute of Psychiatry on the Globe of Mental Health.\nThe institute of Psychiatry has long standing multi-sectorial collaboration with both\nnational and international organizations. It is a partner in various mental health projects\nin association with the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation & Coordination,\nProvincial Health Departments, International Agencies like WHO, UNODC, Education\nDepartment, Schools, Law Enforcement Agencies and various National and\nInternational Universities.\nThe institute is a recognized teaching & training center for post-graduate Fellowship\ntraining in psychiatry by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan and a\ntraining center for clinical psychology training. It also provides training for psychiatric\nnursing to the undergraduate nursing schools.\nThe Institute of psychiatry has been a forerunner in instituting the community mental\nhealth program, the first of its kind in the country and the EMRO Region.
